On Saturday, May 21, 2016, Xi Psi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will hold its 7th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, at the University Park Country Club, 7671 the Park Blvd. in University Park. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the fraternity’s scholarship fund which targets young men in Sarasota/ Manatee Counties, and support their ongoing programs such as the mentoring program and college tour. Over the past six years, the fraternity has awarded 75 $1,000.00 scholarships and 20 $500.00 scholarships to deserving students. They have also funded 20 students on a week long college tour over a 15 year period. The main focus of the fraternity’s efforts is to improve the community to preparing our youth for the future and to help address the unique educational challenges and social needs of deserving under-served mail students in the area. Since its inception, the Alpha Foundation has addressed the issue of low grade point averages, poor performance on standardized tests, higher than normal dropout rates, conflict resolution, character development and a failure of many minority males to graduate from high school.

The Xi Psi Lambda Chapter was chartered on November 17, 1984 after seven men met to inaugurate the establishment of a graduate chapter in Sarasota-Manatee Counties. The founding brothers were Maxie Bragg, Jeremiah Clark, Gwenard Davis, Carlton Evans, Eddie Flowers, John Harvey and Darrel Williams. Although initially small in number, under the leadership of the chapter founders, the brothers of Xi Psi Lambda worked untiringly to affect a positive difference in the lives of young, black males in the Sarasota-Manatee area.
