PALMETTO, FLORIDA – MCR Health Services Foundation announced the 9th annual Edgar H. Price Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award to Coach Eddie Shannon on Thursday September 22, 2016. The event i s named in honor of Manatee County’s past senator, Sen. Edgar H. Price Jr., who spent his career fighting for the rights of the indigent to receive quality medical care.

Each year the MCR Health Services Foundation celebrates a person of the community who has made a difference through demonstrated leadership, community, involvement and philanthropy. This year MCR Health Services Foundation selected Coach Eddie Shannon.

Eddie Shannon coached some of the best athletes in history and is one of the area greats.

Legendary Eddie Shannon grew his coaching career at Palmetto Lincoln, an all-black school, from 1955-1969. During his 13 year run as head coach, Lincoln only lost two games before the school was closed in 1969 for integration. Students from Lincoln were then transferred to Palmetto and Manatee High Schools. At the close of Lincoln High, Shannon a l s o transferred to Manatee High to help students ease into integration. He stayed with the kids at Manatee High for 19 years. Through his 34 years of training, coaching and teaching at several schools, Shannon has touched many lives and continues to do so. He has contributed to the integration progress, promoting peace and harmony during strained times. Eddie

Shannon has truly lived a remarkable life and stands to be an example and mentor forever.

Manatee County Rural Health Services Foundation is committed to supporting MCR Health Services in its mission to provide all patients including the under- served and uninsured access to high quality primary care and preventive health education regardless of race, sex, disability or economic status. In the past, proceeds from previous banquets have gone to benefit a child in need of a new heart, parents dealing with the unfortunate passing of their infant child after a lengthy yet courageous battle, providing free health screenings and combating childhood obesity within our community.
