The Manatee County Bridging the Gap organization held its second annual youth fishing tournament Thursday, July 20th on Palmetto’s historic Green Bridge Fishing Pier. Nearly fifty local children, age 8 through 16, participated in the event, along with over thirty police officers and deputies from the Manatee County Sheriffs Office, the Palmetto Police Department, the Bradenton Police Department, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The goal of the event was to pair local young people with officers and deputies during a one-on-one, fun activity, to encourage communication and understanding. Prizes were awarded for biggest fish (Damya Weeks with a 16.5” catfish), smallest fish (Michael Finnerty with a 5’’ Mangrove Snapper), and most fish (brothers Eddie and Exzavion Hicks with 9 fish in total). Attendees also enjoyed lunch together and the participating young people got to keep their fishing poles.
